THE NEW ZEALAND SERVICE MEDAL 1946-49

Obverse: A representation of the New Zealand Coat of Arms.

Reverse: The inscription "FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1946-1949", with a representation of a fern frond below.

Size: 36mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 32mm in width, of white having in the centre a narrow red stripe and at the edges narrow stripes of black. Black and white are New Zealand's national colours and red and white are those of Japan.

Suspension: By a plain straight suspender.

This medal was awarded to members of the New Zealand Forces who served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan between 23rd March, 1946, and 31st March, 1949.

Members of the New Zealand Armed Forces, members of the New Zealand Merchant Navy, and members of the crew of a civil airline incorporated in New Zealand, who served in Japan for twenty eight days on aggregate between these dates, were entitled to the medal.
