THE GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL - 1962

Obverse: A Crowned Effigy of the Sovereign.

Reverse: A Wreath surrounding the words; "FOR CAMPAIGN SERVICE" surmounted by the Crown.

Size: 36mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 32mm wide. Purple with 5mm green edges.

Suspension: By an ornate non-swivelling bar.

Clasps Issued: 5

Instituted on 6th October, 1964, with effect from 23rd December 1962, The General Service Medal - 1962 replaced The Naval General Service Medal 1915-64 and The General Service Medal (Army and Air Force) 1918-62, and was available to all three Services. Clasps are awarded for each campaign, with the following clasps having been awarded to New Zealanders;

"BORNEO"
Awarded for service against rebels in North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei between 24th December, 1962, and 11th August, 1966. The qualifications for the award of this clasp were;

NAVY
(1) Service afloat for an aggregate of thirty days, or more, in ships or craft operating on the waters of North Borneo, Sarawak, or Brunei, or off the coasts in support of shore operations.
(2) One sortie, or more, as a member of an aircraft crew in support of operations ashore.
(3) Service of thirty days, or more, ashore when posted to units operating in the above areas.

ARMY
Thirty days or more service, not necessarily continuous, in the above areas.

AIR FORCE
(1) Thirty days or more service, not necessarily continuous, in the areas mentioned above, serving with any unit of H.M. Forces.
(2) One or more sortie over the areas mentioned when in direct support of operations.

GENERAL
Those who received a personal award conferred by the Queen and those whose service was curtailed by death or wounds were also eligible for the award irrespective of their length of service.

The recipient of a Mention in Dispatches may wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon.

"MALAY PENINSULA"
Awarded for service in Singapore and on the Malay Peninsula during the confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia between 17th August, 1964, and 11th August, 1966. The qualifications for the award of this clasp were;

NAVY
Thirty days or more afloat in support of operations in the area.

ARMY
Thirty days or more service on emergency duty in the area.

AIR FORCE
Thirty days or more service on emergency duty in the area.

GENERAL
The medals were awarded where death or wounds prevented personnel from serving the full thirty days.

The recipient of a Mention in Dispatches may wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon.
