THE UNITED NATIONS MEDAL (UNDOF)

Obverse: The United Nations global projection emblem, above which are the letters "UN".

Reverse: Plain, with the legend "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE".

Size: 35mm in diameter.

Ribbon: 35mm wide, on each side of the ribbon for this medal is an 8mm wide red stripe. In the centre is a 2mm red stripe. Between these are, from the outside, a 3mm white stripe, a 1mm black stripe and a 3.5mm dark blue stripe. Ninety days of service in the Mission was necessary to qualify for award of the medal.

Suspension: The ribbon is threaded through a 12mm diameter ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece. The ring will move forwards and backwards.

United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, in the Golan Heights, June 1974 to present. Established following the war between Israel and Syria that took place in 1973, UNDOF was to maintain the cease-fire, to supervise the disengagement of the two forces, and to supervise the areas of separation. Since 1977 there have been no major incidents involving UNDOF; the situation in the Israeli-Syria sector has remained relatively quiet, and UNDOF continues to accomplish its mission with the co-operation of all parties. The maximum strength of UNDOF is 1,450 personnel. New Zealand military observers were seconded from UNTSO to serve with UNDOF in 1974, 1982 and 1986.
